Welcome to the jungle

Welcome to the jungle

Butterflies, leaves, trees and animal prints were strewn across garments in collections shown at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2010.

Inspired by the earth, the sea, sunsets and animals, designers stayed true to environmentally-friendly fabrics and natural colours to present innovative collections that were high on wearability.

Hits and misses

Emerging designers were most appreciated and Malini Ramani takes the trophy for the best collection and show. It was sexy, racy and so femme fatale-ish!

Meanwhile, Sabyasachi played with sexual undertones by using sheers fabrics that offered a naughty peek of underwear. Then there was Christopher Kane who added a classic Lolitaesque style to his garments with the use of sheers.

However, fashion week goers were mildly disappointment by his collection because it was showcased last year in shows abroad. Basically, there was nothing new in terms of Kane's clothes for LFW, except for the excellent manner it was presented in. The show was extremely cohesive with perfect tailoring.

Let's accessorise

Taking the jungle/tribal theme forward was the accessories show on Day 5 at Lakme Fashion Week - accessories designer Sonali Dalwani of Crimzon created statement jewellery with precious stones called 'agats' that were encased in gold. Inspired by butterflies, the concept for her fun jewellery line was to be free-spirited and happy. So her accessories were colourful with a youthful vibe.

Malaga by Malini Agarwarlla focused on resort chic with clusters of pearls and long chains in gold, teamed with 3D embroidered oversized clutches. Accessories designer Eina Ahluwalia mixed stones to create neckpieces that looked very tribal.

Where's the energy?

Although very well-organised, this time round, Lakme Fashion Week missed the energy and excitement of the previous seasons. The buzz, such as that which surrounded events like the Mai Mumbai show and LFW celebrating 10 years, was missing. The celeb quotient was low and there were less participating designers.

However, there were some new initiatives in terms of buyers and awards for photographers.

New initiatives

Lakme Fashion Week had invited e-commerce buyers for the fist time ever, and iDiva caught up with Sunjay Guleria from Exclusively.in. He shared that he loved Malini Ramani, Manish Malhotra's menswear, Asmita Marwa and a few emerging designers!

Sunjay also revealed, "We are primarily catering to the NRIs living in North America and the Indian community there is unique because of their weddings. There exists a good demand for bridalwear by Indians and foreigners who come as guests for Indian weddings." So designers who created bridalwear (Nikasha Tawadey, Riyaz Gangji, Abdul Halder, Rocky S, Anand Kabra) rejoice!

The right price

Most designers are also taking care of their prices to make their collection more affordable. Take for example, Anita Dongre's collection, where garments start from Rs3,490 for an elegant chikan embroidered white linen short, with silk organza yoke and prices go up to Rs46,960 for a pink sari embellished with precious crystals.

There were almost 400 pairs of shoes by LFW's co-sponsor Tres Mode footwear that enhanced the entire look on the runway. There were buyers from the Middle East and South Africa, and we found out that Pria Kataria Puri's Resort collection was completely sold out!
