Experts tell us our vaginas actually have organisms that help it stay clean and healthy. Therefore, maintaining vaginal health does not require a lot of effort on your part.
But there are some dos and don'ts you need to learn about if you do not want feel uncomfortable down under.

According to Dr Swati Kapoor, a gynaecologist, many women believe that discharge is a sign that your vagina has a problem. "In fact, transparent or cloudy-white discharge that is odourless is normal. Only if there is a change in either of these characteristics should you get worried," she says.
Here's what you should know about vaginal hygiene:

Wash with warm water

This will keep your vagina free of bacteria and protect it from foreign particles. Washing is especially important during your period and after sex. According to Dr Swati Kapoor, you should also wash yourself every time you urinate.

Be careful with hair removal creams

According to Dr Suresh Rao, a gynaecologist, you should consult your doctor before using removal creams for pubic hair. "Many women get a rash because of the chemicals in hair removal creams," he explains. If you have already gone through this, meet your doctor for proper medication.

Avoid using razors

Removal of pubic hair is important to maintain vaginal hygiene. But using razors is difficult and chances are you will cut yourself. "This can result in excruciating pain during urination and intercourse," says Dr Rao.

Change tampons regularly

According to Dr Kapoor, tampons can make your period more comfortable but you need to change them regularly. "Changing them every time you urinate will keep yeast infections away," she says.

Don't use perfumed products

You may want to smell nice, but perfumed sprays, gels powders and sanitary napkins may contain chemicals that do not suit your skin. "You could get bacterial or yeast infection, for which you will have to go to the doctor," says Dr Rao.

Paying attention to hygiene will help you avoid burns, rashes and itching in your vagina. If you do experience any of these, go to a doctor immediately. Simple problems can turn into serious complications if not treated in time.
