During the auditioning process, the Director of Miss Botswana, Ms Daisy Botsoba asked the girls if they were aware that they would have to dispense with their boyfriends during their reign as Miss Botswana.
The girls said they were aware and clear about the requirement and they had to say something about this particular requirement.
Naledi Tomtom, a first year University of Botswana student reading for BA Humanities admitted to having a boyfriend, but said she understood that should she be the winner she would not continue to be involved with him.
She added that this one requirement does not disadvantage her in anyway as her boyfriend is supportive and has even encouraged her to try her luck.
My boyfriend is very supportive; he is the one who gave me all the information about this years pageant and encouraged me to participate and compete, noted Naledi. The lanky Naledi further said that her boyfriend has agreed to give way and wait whilst she carried out her Miss Botswana duties should lady luck smile on her adding that he sees potential in herself.
Still on the boyfriend issue, 20-year-old Ofentse Dipeba, who is studying at the ABM College said this is a golden opportunity not to be missed. She has just parted with her boyfriend and she said that for her it will be a smooth sailing as she is not involved love-wise.
However, she felt a pity for those girls who are involved, saying that if they win they will find it difficult to choose between the crown and the boyfriend as some of them have built future out of the relationships.
Nevertheless, Ofentse discouraged relationship commitments among the girls of her age saying that they only complicate things.
She noted that if she had a boyfriend and happened to win the coveted Miss Botswana title she would definitely go for the crown and forgo the boyfriend.
Meanwhile, the director of Leapfrog and the organizer of the pageant, Mr Thapelo Pabalinga said that the auditions have so far gone well.
He noted that even the girls who auditioned were better than last years especially in terms of height considering that Botswana has many short girls.
Regarding the event, he said that they hope to have a much better event compared to last years as they would take a leaf from the previous event for comparison sake. Leapfrog Advertising and 63 Entertainment are the organisers of the Miss Botswana pageant and they worked on the pageant last year.
Their contract for organizing the show is for five years and this is their second year of organizing it. BOPA
