Another 80s classic being remade

Another 80s classic being remade

Hot on the heels of the nauseating news that JLo's set to headline a remake of the silly but sweet '80s gem, "Overboard" comes reports of another impending travesty...

Bloody Disgusting and Deadline Hollywood Daily are reporting that Fred Dekker's beloved 80s classic "The Monster Squad" (1987) is set to be remade - by, of course, serial 'remakers' Platinum Dumes.

Yep, the 'geniuses' behind the remodeled Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Leatherface franchises will pit a new troupe of pint-sized horror buffs up against classic movie monsters Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Gill Man and the Mummy.

I imagine, since Platinum Dunes is all about the gore and not at all about the giggles, this new "Monster Squad" will borderline more on the frightening than the fun.

So is there any hope?

Well, I suppose the only thing seemingly in the remake's favour is that Rob Cohen, himself a producer on the original "Squad", is back to produce - and possibly direct - this one. Still, that's no excuse for remaking something but that doesn't need remaking.... in fact, original director Dekker was, until I'm guessing up til an hour ago, championing a sequel.

"At Monster Mania, I was sitting around with the Squad and we started talking about 'where are these characters today?'" Dekker told Dread Central in a recent interview. "I got really excited about it the more we talked about it; imagine Rudy as an auto mechanic in Detroit with a crumbling marriage and an alcohol problem, and he gets a phone call from his old pal Sean who tells him they gotta get back together. That's a movie I would go see!"

Me too. Unfortunately, Dekker's likely got about as much clout in Hollywood as I or Heather Thomas have.

The original flick, a fun-filled adventure/comedy most of us grew up on, was only a minor hit when released in theaters in 1987 but become a cult favourite thanks to video. Each and every year someone somewhere is throwing a special screening of the flick or a convention is honoring its cast and cast.
